  • Product Q&A

What is your source of creatine monohydrate ? As far as I am aware creatine is commonly derived from red meat, being a vegan product how do you source your creatine?

See below for the sources of all the ingredients in fermented BCAA+ creatine. Our product is unique in that it is vegan and does not contain any artificial colours, sweeteners or flavours.

fermented L-Glutamine – beet sugar, molasses or corn
    fermented L-isoleucine – corn
    fermented L-Leucine – corn
    fermented L-L-valine – corn
Creatine – synthetic (from glycolonitrile and monomethylamine).

Creatine monohydrate, like most amino acids used in food and natural health product industries, is manufactured by a series of chemical reactions involving the additions of salts, amide (nitrogen and carbon compounds) and catalysts. The reactions cause creatine crystals to form, after which they are isolated and purified to provide only creatine monohydrate. The creatine monohydrate is structurally identical to creatine found in meat, and the absorption of creatine monohydrate, as well as its efficacy, have been reported – including a human study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (2009, Spillane, et al.)

This product, as with all of our products, is made with non-GMO ingredients.

Has this product been tested for potency of each it's ingredients?

The potency of all of our products is tested and guaranteed until the expiry date.

Where can I find nutritional info on this product? I'm specifically interested in calorie information.

I am very sensitive to caffeine and other stimulants. I am wondering if the Lou Han go is used as a stimulant as the info says that you should not use coffee with this product?

Lo Han is a perennial fruit from a climbing vine, as it is intensely sweet, naturally we use it to sweeten the fermented BCAA+ creatine. It is low-calorie, low glycemic and has antihyperglycemic effects. It does not contain caffeine or other stimulating factors.

The caution is as per Health Canada and is in regards to taking creatine with caffeine. The suggestion that caffeine and creatine be taken away from one another stems from a decade old research report indicating that high-dose synthetic caffeine (approx. 400mg) can diminish some of the immediate benefits of creatine on muscle torque. It should also be pointed out that there is also research (also from a decade ago) showing that caffeine at 400mg enhances the benefits of creatine, as reported by Doherty, et al. “Caffeine is ergogenic after supplementation of oral creatine monohydrate Med Sci Sports Exerc 2002”.  So we have two studies with the exact opposite findings!

How many servings is there in a can?

There are 20 1 scoop servings in each container of fermented BCAA+ creatine.

Do I need to take dextrose with this product? I heard it helps with absorption.

BCAAs are well absorbed when administered without dextrose. Researchers showed that 5g of BCAA (with a non-caloric sweetener only) increased blood BCAA by 350% within 30 minutes. Still, when it comes to post-workout, we recognize the importance of glucose relatively soon after exertion. A small rise in insulin may help with repair and growth of muscle tissue. However, Genuine Health’s fermented BCAA + creatine is made without added glucose (and certainly it can be taken with a glucose-rich beverage such as grape juice).

When stacking BCAA and l-glutamine do they compete for receptors? Do they need to be taken at different times in the day?

There has been some debate over the years concerning the co-administration of BCAAs and glutamine. Early on experts suggested they should be taken separately, while some of the leaders in sports nutrition now state that it makes no difference. To our knowledge there has been no research published on BCAA vs. glutamine related to intestinal absorption and pharmacokinetics. And we have looked high and low. In the absence of such research, we go to the default question which is “does the combo of BCAAs and glutamine work? Here the answer is affirmative. BCAAs and glutamine (taken together) can improve performance and power in strength training reps (e.g. Gonzalez AM, et al. J Sports Sci Med 2011; 10:261-66)

Does this product contain any artificial flavours, colours, or sweeteners?

No, all Genuine Health products are free from artificial additives. Genuine Health even goes one step further by ensuring all products are GMO-free!

Does the ratio of leucine, isoleucine, and valine matter?

Although there are a few different theories in regards to this, the most popular belief among sports nutrition enthusiasts is that a ratio of 2:1:1 is the optimal ratio for BCAAs as this resembles the same ratio of BCAAs naturally present in muscle tissue. As we workout we deplete these amino acids (catabolism), and therefore a ratio of 2:1:1 is ideal for replenishing these stores (anabolism). Genuine Health’s fermented BCAA+ creatine is formulated specifically to provide balanced, absorbable, plant-based branch chain amino acids in the most beneficial form and ratio.
