Quality & Testing
When it comes to fish oils, quality, purity and sustainability is important. Our Omega-3 Superior Quality 5 Point Program certifies our commitment to you: quality Omega-3 fish oils that are rigorously tested to ensure that they exceed quality, freshness and purity standards, while offering high potency EPA and DHA.
Sustainable & traceable sources: We source our omega-3 fish oils from wild-caught fish and sustainable fisheries that are strictly regulated by government agencies. These fisheries protect biodiversity, are environmentally responsible, and globally ranked #1 for sustainability. The waters in which the fish are harvested are closely monitored to assess biomass and to avoid the degradation of all marine species, including plankton, seabirds and sea lions. We also maintain full control of our fish oil supply chain: from harvest to manufacturing there is full visibility will all stages of production. Each and every batch can be traced back to the catch!
fresh technology™: Our omega-3 fish oils are processed using the most advanced technologies, resulting in the cleanest, purest and freshest fish oils available today – with optimal absorption and no fishy repeat or odour. Specific handling and storage procedures are monitored to protect the integrity of these specialized oils.
oMEGAcheck+™: Our 200+ step quality check process produces superior omega-3 fish oils that meet and exceed quality, freshness, and purity standards, as established by international governing bodies, including including the European Commission (EC), Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA), Health Canada, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), and the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED).
3rd party testing: all of our fish oils are subjected to 3rd Party Testing by International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS) and we are proud to have achieved a 5 star rating! IFOS rated fish oils must meet the certain criteria of matching the label claim for EPA and DHA, and meet the safety standards for environmental contaminants set by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3 (GOED) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
omega-3 oil freshness and safety is guaranteed based on these 3rd party test results for oxidation and contaminants including:
- Dioxins and furans
- Dioxin-like PCBs
- Acid value
Research studies: We’re committed to conducting research on our own products. Our omega-3 fish oils have been the subject of rigorous scientific investigation in human studies conducted across North America.
- Product Q&A
All our omega3 softgels are made using porcine gelatin.
A small amount is used simply to provide antioxidant protection of the fish oil. The amount is between 3 to 5 IU/softgel by product.
Our capsules are all prion-free. Whenever bovine is used we obtain BSE-free certification before use.
We use both ethyl ester (EE) and triglyceride (TG) forms depending on the form best suited for the product.
Our omega3 is in TG form. omega3+ extra strength, joy and think softgels are all in EE form. Liquid omega3+ JOY and think are in TG form.
It is important to note that both EE and TG forms are highly stable, and with our Omega-3 Superior Quality 5 Point Program, you know that numerous testing procedures are being done to ensure the cleanest, freshest fish oil.
Research shows that both EE and TG forms raise omega-3 blood levels to near saturation points, indicating that both forms are being readily absorbed by the body. Further to this the largest human study involving Omega-3s, the GISSI Prevenzione study, used the EE form of Omega-3 and found remarkable results with respect to heart attack rates and mortality post heart attack. Regardless of whether it’s EE or TG, what is most important when selecting fish oil is choosing one that is known to be of the highest quality, free of toxins and contaminants, and from a brand you trust.
Yes, we use molecular distillation, the most gentle, yet highly effective way to steam off impurities. The process preserves the delicate fatty acids. Our fish oils go through extensive testing to ensure quality, safety and efficacy.
Taking any more than 2 grams of EPA/DHA combined per day should only be done under the direction of a healthcare provider. Although higher levels are likely to be safe, taking beyond 2g (combined EPA + DHA, not fish oil) is usually reserved for medical conditions where healthcare providers need to be on board.
This information is referring to cod liver oils, which have recently been shown to have high PCBs and other environmental toxins (it was a study in the United Kingdom). This is not the case with our omega3+ line, which has been shown through independent testing to be free of mercury, PCBs and other toxins. Also, unlike fish liver oils, the omega3+ line of products are not rich in vitamins A and D – fat soluble vitamins where care needs to be taken in pregnancy.
Vitamin D is concentrated in the liver of the fish and thus plentiful in cod liver oil. All of our fish oils are made from the whole body of the fish and have an insignificant amount of vitamin D (aside from omega3+ TRIPLE STRENGTH + D3, where 1000IU of Vitamin D3 is added.
Our omega3+ fish oil goes through over 200 quality and purity checks during processing and manufacturing. In terms of cleanliness, it exceeds the GOED (Global Organization for EPA & DHA), EC (European Commission), and NFSA (Norwegian Food Safety Authority) limits, which are the strictest in the world.
Purines are part of the protein component (muscle) of fish, including sardines. omega3+ products contains the oil of the fish (not the protein), and any residual purines are removed in the process of molecular distillation. Therefore omega3+ is not a source of purines.
Our Omega-3s are produced in an NHPD licensed and FDA approved facility, contains USP certified Omega-3 oils and goes through over 200 quality checks in the course of production and release. Our oils are IFOS certified. You can read more about IFOS certification standards at: www.ifosprogram.com
Yes! The oil in our omega3 softgels and Liquid omega3+ fish oil supplement is exactly the same with regards to actives and quality parameters.
Yes, this is normal. The appearance of the oil can change when it gets very cold. When it warms up, the cloudiness will go away.
There is no citrus in the orange flavouring used in our omega3 fish oils. This is a non-GMO, all-natural flavour blend, not an orange ingredient.
Once the Liquid omega3+ supplement is opened and kept in the fridge, it should be consumed within approximately 3 months’ time. After some time, if the smell or taste is “off” or a lot more “fishy” compared to when you first started taking it, this is a sign that oxidation has occurred to the point where the fish oil should no longer be consumed.
All of our omega3+ supplements contain natural tocopherols (vitamin E) as a natural preservative. Vitamin E is derived from soy oil (non-GMO). Although it does not contain soy protein and is generally not considered an allergy risk, those with severe allergies should take caution.
You can take the Liquid omega3+ with water or any other beverage. Some people blend them into a smoothie as it will mix better that way. Be mindful that since oil and water do not mix well, reducing the amount of water consumed when taking a liquid omega (also taking it with a meal) should minimize the possibility of experiencing fishy repeat.
While we don’t test for the levels of cholesterol in our Omega-3 supplements, it does occur naturally in all fish oils. The cholesterol in fish oils is undifferentiated, meaning it is not of a specific “type” as in human LDL and HDL, etc.
Most importantly, while it has been noted that Omega-3 can sometimes cause a small relative increase in total cholesterol, it has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol, making it a good choice for those looking to lower their “bad” cholesterol levels.
We have a few products that are suitable for children. Any products that do not have a dosage for children must be taken under the guidance of a health care practitioner.
omega3 softgels or liquid: ages 6+
omega3+ THINK softgels: ages 2+
The above products will have a dosage for children on the bottle.
Please note that omega3+ joy is not on the list as it contains a therapeutic dose of EPA.
All of our liquid omega3+ products are in the triglyceride (TG) form. In formulating the liquids for these products we worked with a variety of different fish oils suppliers and types, ultimately the one that worked best in formulation was a TG. Beyond providing great taste, this also provides consumers for a choice of EE or TG within the products we make.
