Soy flour is included in proteins+ bars. It is derived from roasted soy beans and adds to the texture and taste of the finished product. The soy flour helps to keep some level of moisture retained within the bar itself. Only a small amount of soy flour is used, yet without the unique flavour and texture provided by a hint of roasted soy the proteins+ bars would be very bland and dry.
On the label it does state that the bars are “manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts, tree nuts, sesame seeds. May contain nut shell pieces.” Given this warning and your fiancé’s severe allergies, it would be advised you avoid this product.
The bars are manufactured in Canada.
The main sweetener is brown rice syrup and there is a small amount of dextrose (a sugar alcohol).
All of the ingredients in the proteins+ bars play an essential role in the nutrition, taste, sensory aspects, texture and stability of the finished product. Dextrose is the food industry’s name for glucose. Since glucose is the most efficient fuel for the human body, we add a small amount of glucose to enhance energy production and fulfill the expectations of many consumers who use the proteins+ bars for a pre-work out lift and delivery of essential amino acids. The dextrose also adds to the positive sensory and taste aspects of the bar but you will note it is one of the very last ingredients which means there is very little in the bars.
Our ingredients are sourced from around the world, based on availability and quality. All ingredients are non-GMO and must pass testing for heavy metals, microbes, pesticides and more. We choose our ingredients based on quality – flavour, texture, amino acid profile, potency and low heavy metals. What that means is that if the quality of an ingredient doesn’t meet our requirements, which are above what the government requires, for things like heavy metals, pesticides, microbes, GMOs and more, then we will not use it no matter where it comes from.
We continuously search for suppliers who can meet our high standards and supply us with a consistent source of quality ingredients and use only these.
The whey we source for proteins+ is indeed free of antibiotics as well as hormones and pesticides.
Genuine Health has high Quality Control standards, which include 3rd party testing, to ensure the safety and potency of all our ingredients.
The proteins+ bars are in the food category and therefore there is no age restriction, but an appropriate dose needs to be calculated according to age and weight. Health Canada protein (and all macronutrient) guidelines can be found at http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/nutrition/reference/table/ref_macronutr_tbl-eng.php
Keep in mind the protein content in an egg or thick slice of cheese is 6g and a chicken breast is 27g. The maximum daily amount for children is:
a. age 1-3, 13g
b. age 4-8 19g
c. age 9-13 34g
Yes, proteins+ bars include 18 amino acids, including all of the essential amino acids which must be consumed in the diet and cannot be synthesized by the body.
As per Health Canada, there are no safety warnings in regards to those who are pregnant or breastfeeding as it pertains to this product. This being said, it is always best to consult your health care provider before consuming any nutritional supplements while pregnant/breastfeeding.
